As part of our History of Children's nursing exhibition and events programme, RCN exhibition volunteer Sue Ward has interviewed Dr Marie Marshall (MBE). This conversation, which can be viewed in the video below, covers Marie's inspiring journey from State Enrolled Nurse to Professor of Children and Young People’s Nursing.
Sue is a former Group Deputy Chief Nurse while Dr Marie Marshall is Deputy Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals for Research and Innovation, Consultant Nurse for Healthcare Transition at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Honorary Professor in Children and Young People’s Nursing, University of Salford.
After retiring, Sue was keen to continue to use, and share, her 40 years of experience as a general and children’s nurse. Sue became part of the group of volunteers who curated the RCN Library and Archives’ History of Children and Young People’s Nursing exhibition.
The exhibition showcases just some of the career opportunities for children and young people’s nurses. Sue and Marie first worked together as Staff Nurses in the 1980s, and as Sue’s career developed in professional leadership, Marie developed her career as a Consultant Nurse and researcher.
We hope that Marie’s story will inspire nurses at all stages of their career to explore the range of options that are open to them, as well as encouraging others to consider a career in nursing.
