"It’s crucial now that Welsh government see that all roads lead back to safe staffing in the fight to save the NHS"
Nicky Hughes, Associate Director of Nursing (Employment Relations) RCN Wales said“It is deeply concerning but not surprising to read the findings of HIW’s latest report. The fact that the countless initiatives to manage demand are having no real impact on front line workers show that the true solution is investment in the workforce. I wholeheartedly agree with the chair of HIW in that the workforce of the NHS remains its biggest asset. Welsh government must ensure delivery on extending safe staffing legislation, implementation of the nurse retention plan, and improvements to pay, terms and conditions to grow and nurture a sustainable and thriving workforce that meets the health demands of the Welsh public.
“Concerns found in the report of incomplete mandatory training, inconsistent record keeping, and patient dissatisfaction with waiting times are reflective of the lack of time to fulfil frontline duties and provide to the highest standard of care. Our members repeatedly tell us of sleepless nights spent thinking what they could have done better if only they had adequate time. In addition, protected time for professional development must be prioritised to ensure safe patient care. This report directly highlights nursing staff’s frustrations.
“What also shines through in this report, however, is the unwavering passion of nursing staff in caring for their patients and their dedication to delivering the best care with compassion and expertise. This is echoed in the experiences of patients. We can’t afford to lose any more of the amazing people that drive the health service in Wales. It’s crucial now that Welsh government see that all roads lead back to safe staffing in the fight to save the NHS.”
