What we are currently working on
- Guidelines for prisons based on the dementia SPACE principles. We're currently seeking feedback from people living in prison and have developed a dementia friendly guide to the SPACE principles and a form to help gather your feedback.
- Review the Delirium Champion resources.
- A series of introductory/educational podcasts by steering committee members.
- Explore care home work streams, particularly around current thinking, centres of excellence and end of life care.
- Complete regular blogs on new care home research/sharing good practice.
- An educational event on people living with learning disabilities and frailty/dementia, in partnership with the British Geriatric Society (BGS) and the RCN Learning Disability Nursing Forum.
- Work on connecting life stories with person centred care, social prescribing and how this can support difficult conversations and healthy living.
Recent activity
- Developed the Aspects of Age exhibition, in conjunction with the RCN Library and Heritage Centre.
- Hosted a delirium champions celebration conference in Summer 2019, with approximately 100 delegates.
- Piloted a 'student nursing delirium champion' face-to-face educational resource at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland. The resource was co-designed, developed and produced by the committee members based on the existing RCN delirium champion resources.
- A selection of blogs from forum members.
Leading, collaborating, influencing
The RCN and its forums are invited to participate in many cross working and multidisciplinary workstreams. Below are a selection of some of the activities that members of the Older People's Forum are involved in on your behalf.
- National Dementia Action Alliance (NDAA). Jo James represents the RCN as the chair of the Dementia-Friendly Hospital Taskforce, which informs all of the work the NDAA carry out in developing and promoting the Dementia-Friendly Hospitals Charter.
- National Falls Prevention Coordination Group (NFPCG). The RCN is a member organisation of NFPCG, hosted by Public Health England.
- National Audit of Inpatient Falls (NAIF). Michelle Parker continues to work with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) NAIF Advisory Group to develop and revise the yearly and now continuous audit of inpatient falls.
Consultations
The RCN is the voice of nursing, and is invited to contribute to many consultations. These are some of the recent consultations that the Older People's Forum has been involved in.
