The philosophy and practice of psychiatric nursing
Phil Barker
Ian Hulatt, RCN professional lead for mental health
Reason you chose this book
I have chosen this book for two main reasons. It is a really well written exposition of the craft of mental health nursing and was the reason at a certain point in my career to undertake an education course that took me back to clinical practice.
Review
Phil Barker writes with great compassion and insight into the work of mental health nurses. With the use of clinical vignettes he shows the craft of mental health nursing in its every day nature. Recently described as a world of work characterised as the “accumulation of marginal gains”, the world of the relationship based work that is mental health nursing has perhaps never been better described or its virtues defended.
